When Luzhin learns that a midwife named Anna (Naomi Watts) has discovered incriminating evidence against his "family," he finds his normally steely resolve compromised. While a Washington bigwig (Tom Cruise) goes toe to toe with a reporter (Meryl Streep) on the issue of U.S. troops in Afghanistan, an idealistic professor (Redford) tries to keep his students engaged as two of his former pupils struggle to survive behind enemy lines in the Middle East. 024- 27 Dresses  Tired of being a perpetual bridesmaid after helping 27 friends tie the knot, altruistic Jane (Katherine Heigl) finds herself facing her worst nightmare as her younger sister (Malin Akerman) announces her engagement to the man Jane secretly adores. Fortunately, a Prince Charming in the unlikely form of a divorce lawyer (Patrick Dempsey) offers to lend the bewildered Giselle a hand. 032- Michael Clayton  Screenwriter Tony Gilroy makes his directorial debut with this dramatic thriller about burned-out corporate lawyer Michael Clayton (George Clooney), who's built a career on cleaning up his clients' messes. When a guilt-ridden colleague (Tom Wilkinson) threatens the settlement of a multimillion-dollar case, Clayton faces his biggest challenge ever. Tilda Swinton (with her first Oscar win), Sydney Pollack and Michael O'Keefe round out the impressive cast. 033- 10 Items or Less  While researching a role for an independent film, an aging actor (Morgan Freeman) strikes up an unlikely -- and life-changing -- friendship with a feisty young Latina grocery clerk (Paz Vega) in this inspiring comedy. Stranded at a tiny market on the edge of Los Angeles, the famous actor accepts a ride from sassy store employee Scarlet. Although he took his own life, Zia (Patrick Fugit) isn't ready for such a grim hereafter, particularly when he learns that his ex-girlfriend also killed herself. On a quest to find her, he befriends a jaded hitchhiker and a Russian rocker, and together, they set out in search of a more appealing afterlife. 038- Sin City  Murder, corruption and cover-ups are all part of Sin City's daily routine in this dark film that weaves three tales from Frank Miller's graphic novels. Marv (Mickey Rourke) is a psychotic outcast who seeks vengeance for Goldie's (Jaime King) murder; Dwight (Clive Owen) kills a cop and must cover it up; and nearly retired cop Hartigan (Bruce Willis) is accused of a crime he didn't commit. Hedwig's offbeat show slays audiences -- but in diners not clubs. Mitchell also wrote and directed the comedy, which won at the Sundance Film Festival and was nominated for several Independent Spirit Awards. 066- Some Kind of Wonderful  Watts (Mary Stuart Masterson) is a young tomboy who has a crush on her best friend, Keith (Eric Stoltz), but her feelings go unrequited as he falls for Amanda (Lea Thompson), a rich girl with snobby friends. Unfortunately for Keith, Amanda's wealthy ex-boyfriend wants her back and is willing to do anything to get her. Before that happens, we get a Devo soundtrack, a locker-room "penis" contest, weird exchange students, crab lice, a fat-kid schlemiel and Diane Franklin as the "nice new girl in town." 083- Surf's Up  In this animated mockumentary, film crews go behind the scenes at the Penguin World Surfing Championship to provide a close-up look at the inventors of surfing. Yes, penguins were the first species to hang 10 -- or at least that's what this Oscar-nominated film purports. Animators Ash Brannon and Chris Buck co-direct the spoof, and Shia LaBeouf, Jeff Bridges, James Woods, Zooey Deschanel, Brian Benben and Jane Krakowski lend their voices. 084- Perfect Stranger  This thriller directed by James Foley stars Halle Berry as Ro, a woman who risks her life to discover the identity of a stranger lurking on the Internet who may hold the answers to her friend's murder. What Ro discovers is a murky world of online deception peopled by the likes of Harrison Hill (Bruce Willis), a mysterious figure who may be a friend or a foe. Giovanni Ribisi, Leigh Spofford and Jason Antoon also star. 085- Unaccompanied Minors  Five disparate kids snowed in at the airport on Christmas Eve learn some lessons about friendship in this quirky teen comedy. Cassavetes' charming indie yarn follows 30ish New Yorker Nora Wilder (Parker Posey), a single woman in a dead-end job whose friends are all happily engaged romantically. But love seems to elude Nora -- until she meets an oddball Frenchman (played by Melvil Poupaud) who helps her discover life beyond her self-imposed boundaries. Gena Rowlands, Griffin Dunne and Drea de Matteo also star. 087- The Valet  When a photo of billionaire businessman Pierre Levasseur (Daniel Auteuil) and his supermodel mistress, Elena (Alice Taglioni), makes the papers, he gets in dutch with his wife (Kristin Scott Thomas). To trick her and save his marriage, Pierre tracks down an unassuming valet (Gad Elmaleh) who was inadvertently part of the picture and pays him to feign a romance with Elena. But unintended consequences ensue in this merry comedy. 088- A Mighty Heart  While in Pakistan researching a story on shoe bomber Richard Reid in 2002, Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl (Dan Futterman) is suddenly kidnapped. His pregnant wife, Mariane (Angelina Jolie), displays great courage as she desperately tries to find her husband and rise above the bitterness and hatred that surrounds her. Versatile director Michael Winterbottom directs this poignant adaptation of Mariane Pearl's real-life memoir. 089- Spy Hard  Secret agent flicks get the Airplane treatment when that film's star (Leslie Nielsen) goes on a mission of belly-laughs armed with a slew of secret weapons: puns, sight gags, in-jokes and seductive female spies. Agent WD-40 (Nielsen) is summoned out of retirement to stop the evil mastermind Gen. Rancor (Andy Griffith) from nuclear extortion. Don't miss Weird Al Yankovich's spoof of James Bond opening credit sequences. 090- Naked Gun 2 1/2: The Smell of Fear  The second film based on the "Police Squad" TV series, Naked Gun 2 ½ finds bumbling cop Frank Drebin (Leslie Nielsen) out to foil the big boys in the energy industry, who intend to suppress technology that will put them out of business. As always, the jokes (and sight gags) fly like gunfire! Also returning from the first film are Priscilla Presley and George Kennedy. 091- Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult  Police Lt. Frank Drebin (Leslie Nielsen) gets called out of retirement and sent to prison on an undercover assignment. Dean Cameron, Tom Bresnahan, Darlene Vogel and Patrick Labyorteaux star in director Damian Lee's rowdy comedy, filmed on location at British Columbia's Whistler Mountain. 093- The Long Weekend  Ad exec Ed Waxman (Brendan Fehr) has two problems: One, he has 48 hours to come up with a can't-miss campaign or he's out of a job; and two, a visit from his oversexed brother Cooper (Chris Klein), who insists on helping Ed score, proves to be a distraction he can't ignore. But the heist goes awry and turns into a tawdry exposé when, during a two-day standoff with police, the media get wind of the story. Sidney Lumet directed, and Frank Pierson won an Oscar for Best Screenplay. 133- Talk to Her  Pedro Almodóvar's Oscar-winning drama explores the bond forged between two men under tragic circumstances. When a bullfighting accident sends his girlfriend, Lydia (Rosario Flores), into a coma, Marco (Darío Grandinetti) visits her in the private clinic where Benigno (Javier Cámara) works as a nurse. Shy and a bit strange, Benigno tirelessly tends to Alicia (Leonor Watling), a comatose ballet dancer and object of his obsession. 134- Demetri Martin. Person.  With his trademark blend of wry and penetrating humor, inspired art and music, "The Daily Show" correspondent and funnyman Demetri Martin will tie you up in stitches in this hourlong extravaganza of monologues and multimedia. Nothing is safe from Martin's original and penetrating vision as he proves once again why he's among the most celebrated and unique comics of his -- or any -- generation. 135- Who is Cletis Tout?  Prison escapee Trevor Finch (Christian Slater) assumes the identity of a deceased man, Cletis Tout, but soon discovers that someone had put out a hit on Cletis. Now, as Finch and fellow escapee Micah (Richard Dreyfuss) race to recover Micah's hidden diamonds, they must outrun not only the police but hit man Critical Jim (Tim Allen), as well! Portia de Rossi plays Finch's girlfriend, Tess, in this caper comedy. 136- I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry  Firefighters Chuck Ford (Adam Sandler) and Larry Allensworth (Kevin James) are guy's guys, loyal to the core -- which is why when widower Larry asks Chuck to pose as his gay lover so that he can get domestic partner benefits for his kids, his buddy agrees. Things get dicey, however, when a bureaucrat comes calling, and the boys are forced to present a picture of domestic bliss in this comedy co-starring Dan Aykroyd and Steve Buscemi. 137- Hot Rod  What better way to impress step-dad than to jump Snake River Canyon on a moped? That's the premise of this over-the-top action comedy from a pair of "Saturday Night Live" veterans. Akiva Schaffer directs, and Andy Samberg (a co-writer) stars as the accident-prone daredevil determined to carry out the ridiculous feat in this silly send-up of Evel Knievel's famously unsuccessful jump. Sissy Spacek and Ian McShane ("Deadwood") co-star. 138- No End in Sight  This in-depth, Oscar-nominated documentary from filmmaker (and former Brookings Institution fellow) Charles Ferguson examines the decisions that led to the 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq and the handling of the subsequent occupation by President George W. Bush and his administration. Featuring exclusive interviews with central players and detailed analysis, the film pulls no punches as it chronicles the twists and turns America took on the path to war. 139- The Corporation  This documentary charts the spectacular rise of corporations as a dramatic, pervasive presence in our lives. Filmmakers Mark Achbar and Jennifer Abbott present a timely, entertaining critique of global conglomerates as they chronicle the origins of corporations, as well as their inner workings, controversial impacts and possible futures. Inge begins her tale in 1920, when she's just become a mail-order bride to Norwegian-American farmer Olaf. Discovering that Inge's heritage is actually German, both Olaf and the community struggle to overcome years of anti-German propaganda and prejudice. 144- The Good German  U.S. Army correspondent Jake Geismar (George Clooney) gets caught in a web of intrigue involving ex-flame Lena (Cate Blanchett) in Steven Soderbergh's drama set in post-World War II Berlin. Lena's missing husband is hunted by U.S. and Russian military, and in desperation, she looks to Jake for a way out. Tension mounts as Jake discovers Lena's been keeping secrets and the black market dealings of his shady driver (Tobey Maguire) come into play. 145- Shortbus  Director John Cameron Mitchell delivers an unbridled look at the New York City underground, focusing on a group of hipsters who frequent a downtown club renowned for its lascivious ways. Through graphic polymorphous sexual couplings -- and using an ensemble cast composed largely of first-time actors -- the film chronicles each character's erotic journey of self-discovery in a raw and riveting fashion. 146- A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints  Robert Downey Jr. stars in director Dito Montiel's autobiographical coming-of-age drama set in tough, blue-collar Queens, N.Y. While his young friends all seem to end up as junkies, inmates or corpses, Dito (Downey) miraculously escapes the same fate -- a fact he can only attribute to divine intervention. The film's high-powered supporting cast includes Dianne Wiest, Chazz Palminteri, Eric Roberts and Rosario Dawson. 147- Candy  Two young bohemians hooked on each other -- and on smack -- head down the path to perdition in this potent drama directed by Neil Armfield. Giddily in love, Dan (Heath Ledger) and Candy (Abbie Cornish) soon find themselves swept up in a vortex of addiction that inexorably unravels their relationship and their lives. Geoffrey Rush is outstanding as the indulgent chemistry professor (and functional junkie) who supplies the couple with heroin. 148- Driving Lessons  Looking to earn some cash -- and to get out from under the thumb of his domineering mother (Laura Linney) -- shy teen Ben Marshall (Rupert Grint) goes to work as an assistant to a tetchy retired actress (Julie Walters). But what begins as a simple summer job soon turns into a life-changing experience for young Ben. Nicholas Farrell plays Linney's henpecked spouse in this affecting coming-of-age drama from director Jeremy Brock. 149- 2 Days in Paris  Returning from a disastrous "romantic" trip to Venice, Marion (Julie Delpy) and Jack (Adam Goldberg) stop in Paris for two days to visit Marion's parents. But Marion's Parisian ex-lovers, her overbearing parents and culture shock all conspire to make American-born Jack feel even more estranged from Marion in this quirky comedy. Delpy, who also directed, received an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best First Feature. 150- American Pie Presents: Beta House  Dwight Stifler (Steve Talley) and his cousin Erik (John White) are back for another piece of the pie in this epic battle of the frats, which pits the beloved Beta house against the rival GEKs in a contest for social supremacy. The two houses square off in the long-banned competition known as the Games. Eugene Levy returns as Mr. Levenstein and Meghan Heffern co-stars as Erik's new love, a nice girl who isn't down with the fraternity high jinks. 151- Live Free or Die Hard  John McClane (Bruce Willis) is back and badder than ever, and this time he's up against a ring of Internet terrorists. Now working for Homeland Security, the decidedly low-tech McClane calls on the services of a young hacker (Justin Long) in his bid to stop a shadowy group intent on taking control of America's computer infrastructure. Fear not, the information age plot still boasts plenty of good old-fashioned gunfights, smashups and explosions. Note: The Blu-Ray version of this film is rated PG-13. 152- License to Wed  Newly engaged Ben Murphy (John Krasinski) and Sadie Jones (Mandy Moore) encounter a roadblock to their trip down the aisle when her unusual pastor, Father Frank (Robin Williams), insists they go through a tough and quirky prenup course before he'll marry them. Since Sadie dreams of having a traditional wedding at her family church, the two agree to the marital boot camp -- but find it puts their relationship through some unexpected challenges. 153- Talk to Me  Oscar nominee Don Cheadle stars as real-life radio trailblazer Ralph "Petey" Greene, a high-school dropout and charismatic ex-con who leveraged a prison disc jockey gig into a stint at a Washington, D.C., radio station, a television show and an invitation to the White House. Chiwetel Ejiofor, Martin Sheen, Cedric the Entertainer and Taraji P. Henson also star in this compelling biopic from director Kasi Lemmons. 154- This Film Is Not Yet Rated  Kirby Dick's provocative documentary investigates the secretive and inconsistent process by which the Motion Picture Association of America rates films. Dick questions whether certain studios get preferential treatment, exposes the discrepancies in how the MPAA views sex and violence, and reveals the association's efforts to control culture. Interviewees include John Waters, Darren Aronofsky, Maria Bello, Atom Egoyan, Kevin Smith and more. 155- Perfume: The Story of a Murderer  Born with an acute sense of smell, Jean-Baptiste Grenouille (Ben Whishaw) resorts to dark deeds in creating a perfume that captures the essence of a woman in this 18th-century thriller based on Patrick Süskind's best-selling novel. The disturbing intensity mounts as Baroque-born Grenouille's obsession to create the ultimate scent moves from innovation to murderous aberration. Alan Rickman co-stars along with Dustin Hoffman as a master perfumer. 156- Helvetica  We use it every day on our computers, we see it on street signs -- and we take it for granted. Now, Gary Hustwit's unique documentary introduces us to Helvetica, whose readability has made it the most popular font in the world. Interviews with designers and artists offer insight into the development, use and universal acceptance of Helvetica as the typeface of choice for everything from writing letters to creating corporate logos. 157- Puccini for Beginners  In this love-crazed comedy, commitment phobic Allegra (Elizabeth Reaser) is recovering from a breakup with her girlfriend but begins questioning her sexuality and sanity when she falls for a member of the opposite sex. Philip (Justin Kirk) is the tidy professor who romances the ambivalent Allegra while she also pursues Grace (Gretchen Mol), a straight, recently single woman. Director Maria Maggenti is the force behind this snappy screwball romp. 158- Kickin' It Old Skool  Awakening after 20 years in a coma that resulted from a break-dancing accident, Justin Schumacher (Jamie Kennedy) quickly learns that a lot has changed in the world. When he discovers that his parents have enormous medical bills, Justin tries to save the day by entering himself and his friends in a dance competition, but standing in the way is a longtime foe -- who's engaged to Justin's dream girl. Michael Rosenbaum and Maria Menounos also star. 159- Infamous  Director Douglas McGrath's biographical drama stars Toby Jones as iconoclastic writer Truman Capote, whose investigation into the grisly murders of a rural Kansas family has unintended consequences. While probing the psyches of the killers (played by Daniel Craig and Lee Pace) as research for his soon-to-be best seller In Cold Blood, Capote forms an attachment to one of the convicted men. Sandra Bullock and Jeff Daniels also star. 160- Freedom Writers  Hilary Swank stars as a young teacher who inspires her at-risk students in this moving drama based on true events. Erin Gruwell (Swank) assigns her class an ambitious project: While studying works such as The Diary of Anne Frank, the kids keep journals about their troubled lives, applying history's lessons to break the cycle of violence and despair that threatens their futures.
